Data and information analysis (D4.3)

Task leader: Dr Glen De'ath, Australian Institute of Marine Science and CRC Reef.

Task associate: Dr David Williams, CRC Reef.

The immense size and complexity of the Great Barrier Reef provides major challenges for researchers to provide useful scientific advice in support of management, use and conservation goals. However leading edge analytical and statistical tools can help researchers make their best efforts at design and interpretation of studies in this complex setting. Other analytical and graphical tools can automate the development of zoning maps that conform to design principles, with speed and flexibility that allow managers and stakeholders to explore any number of options that meet the principles while maximising accommodation of user wishes for access. This project will provide outcomes in three areas: Tools and support for the design, evaluation and monitoring of an effective Marine Protected Areas System for the GBRWHA through the development and application of statistical methodologies and software; ability and tools within the research teams to address complex environmental and ecological issues; enhanced statistical input into the design and analysis of CRC Reef projects. All of these outcomes will greatly enhance the quality of advice that Centre researchers can provide to partners in management and industry.
