Stock structure of commercially important serranid species in the GBR and adjacent reef systems (B4.11)

Task leader: Prof Howard Choat, James Cook University.

Task associate: Mr Duncan Souter, Queensland Seafood Industry Association.

Objectives:

  1. To trial and develop molecular markers designed to:
    a) determine regional patterns of genetic differentiation in coral cods and coral trouts.
    b) determine species identities and the prevalence of hybridisation in exploited species of these groups within the Marine Park.
    c) to establish the identity of widely distributed species that are important in the Australian and international live fish trade.

  2. Shift the focus of the study to a more detailed analysis of coral trout populations in the tropical regions of Australia and adjacent seas using newly developed microsatellite markers.
