CRC Reef reports on social and financial profiles
of Queensland fishers
Commercial fishing is the fifth largest primary industry in Queensland,
with a gross value of production of $361 million per year. The industry
supports 2,000 vessels and directly employs over 6,000 people.
Social and financial profiles of the fishers of Queensland have
been compiled in three technical reports published by CRC Reef.
The reports will help managers to predict and manage the impact
of changes in fisheries policy and management on fishing communities. (see also How social science can help the fishing industry)
These reports provide the first detailed social and financial profiles
of Queensland's commercial, charter and harvest fishing industries.
The information will be invaluable for marine park and fisheries
managers, in assessing the possible effects of proposed management
changes on local communities. It will also be an important tool
in planning for the sustainable use of the Great Barrier Reef World
Heritage Area.
Between August 1999 and April 2000, Dr Mark Fenton and Ms Nadine
Marshall - CRC Reef researchers based at James Cook University -
with a team of trained interviewers, spoke to 2,000 fishers from
Karumba in the north, to Southport in the south. The response rate
impressed the researchers - 92% of the fishers who were contacted
completed the interview. Through structured telephone interviews
Fenton and Marshall asked questions about the fishers' age, marital
status, numbers of children, education, how long they have lived
in their home town, how long they have worked in the industry, whether
they employ crew or work for others, how much they earn, where they
spend their money, and their debts.
The results have been compiled for 22 'Town Resource Clusters'
(TRCs), which represent a group of interdependent towns and communities
in the context of commercial fishing.
