Fish
Biology
Biological information about fish stocks is extremely
important to ensure efficient and successful management
of a fishery. It is essential that managers have a range
of biological information available. The type of information
that is important to managers includes reproductive strategies
of the fish, growth rates, food types and how they fit
into the reef ecosystem.
In a multi-species fishery such as the Great Barrier
Reef line fishery, many fish species are caught and more
are discarded. Therefore, it is not only the target fish
species that need concerted biological research.
The Fishing and Fisheries Project has had a major focus
on biological research for a number of years and has provided
much to the expanding depth of knowledge in this important
area.
Coral trout and red throat emperor being the main target
species in the Queensland Reef line fishery are an important
part of the Fishing and Fisheries Project. However, several
non-target by-catch species, such as bommie cod, stripey
bass, are increasingly becoming an important target for
research.
