Effects of the Tsunami
The International Marine Project Activities Centre
(IMPAC) coordinated the sending of an Australian
mission to assist the Government of Thailand with
advice on rehabilitation of coastal resources
following the tsunami. The mission was organised
by AusAID, Australia’s international aid agency,
and visited Thailand in February.
The team was led by Australian Institute of
Marine Science scientist Dr Clive Wilkinson, who
coordinates the Global Coral Reef Monitoring
Network and IMPAC. Also in the team were Ms
Sheriden Morris of CSIRO, who is the CRC Reef
Program Leader for Healthy Country Healthy
Reef Program, and Mr John Baldwin, who
coordinates international activities at the Great
Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. The mission
has proposed a series of interventions to assist
the Thai Government in restructuring coastal zone
management over the next 18 months, to be
coordinated through CRC Reef.
