May 1999 NEWSLETTERREEF CRC WINS BANKSIA ENVIRONMENTAL PRIZEThe Cooperative Research Centre for the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area has been recognised for its contribution in developing positive solutions to tropical marine issues by winning a Banksia Environmental Award. The 1999 Banksia awards, Australia's most prestigious national environment awards, were announced at a special function in Melbourne recently. The Reef CRC won the coastal and marine category for outstanding achievement in helping to protect, enhance and sustain coastal and marine areas. It was one of 40 finalists in ten categories. CRC Board member and chairman of the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators, Sir Sydney Schubert, received the award trophy on behalf of the Centre. Centre Director Mr Simon Woodley said the award reflects the collective contributions of individuals and organisations who make up Reef CRC network. "We're all delighted with the award, especially so close after winning continued Federal Government funding for the next seven years. It recognizes the hard work, dedication and innovation of scientists working with business leaders and resource managers to address important issues facing the Reef's future," he said. |
