Program 3: Engineering

PROJECT 3.3: ENGINEERING GUIDELINES: DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION

(Dr S Massel, AIMS)

This project will provide 'environmentally friendly' engineering input to existing GBRMPA guidelines to help applicants in the permit process, and produce guidelines for consulting engineers to encourage efficient design, construction and operation of facilities in the Reef which have minimal physical, biological, cultural and social impacts.

A broad reference database has been established and compiled on a bibliographic database. Work has proceeded on preparation of the structure, and component sections on design philosophy, risk assessment and hydraulic design conditions. The document will be presented in four parts to meet the range of requirements and applications of prospective developers (concept), proponents for installations (planning), designers (design) and GBRMPA officers (approval). A program for internal and external review of the guideline components has been developed, involving consultation with professional and industry groups and the public.
