Program 3: Engineering

(Program Leader: Prof A Johnston, JCU)

The improvement of engineering practices for the design, construction and operation of Reef facilities and coastal development infrastructure is the major objective of the Program. To meet this, a range of applied engineering research tasks have been established to provide management agencies, private developers and engineering consultants with guidelines to improve safety, minimise impacts and understand the effects of various engineering developments in the Great Barrier Reef.

A highlight of the Engineering Program as a whole has been developing effective linkages with a broad spectrum of the engineering industry and researchers in Australia and elsewhere. Strong collaborative support is being provided by Reef management agencies and the tourism operators, and interim results have been picked up and used by a wide range of the Centre's stakeholders.
