TACKLING THE BIG ISSUES FACING CORAL REEFS

Researchers from the Cooperative Research Centre for the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area will be among 14 hundred scientists, managers, bureaucrats, politicians and policy-makers from around the world who will meet to tackle some of the big issues facing coral reefs.

"Australians are world leaders in coral reef science," said Dr Russell Reichelt, CEO of CRC Reef Research Centre Ltd. "Our scientific expertise will be critical in finding solutions to the environmental, social and engineering challenges of increasing reef use worldwide."

"The Ninth International Coral Reef Symposium is a showcase for Australian scientific talent," said Dr Terry Done, a researcher with CRC Reef Research Centre Ltd and the Australian Institute of Marine Science and one of the organisers of the symposium. "But we will be learning as much as we pass on."

"We will be discussing the big issues such as over-exploitation, pollution, destructive fishing methods, and analysis of global change and its implication for coral reefs," said Dr Done. "We will be working out what can be done at a local level to make a difference."

"We will also be talking about basic fundamental research on coral reefs," he said. "There is still a need to strive to understand everything we can about what a coral reef is, and how it works. Some of the best solutions come from curiosity-driven research."

The Ninth International Coral Reef Symposium will be held from 23-27 October in Bali, Indonesia. The Australian delegation includes scientists, managers and policy-makers from CRC Reef Research Centre Ltd and its partners, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, James Cook University and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

"The CRC Reef Research Centre Ltd is a partnership between reef scientists, managers, and representatives from industry and business," said Dr Reichelt. "This partnership is the key to our leading role in reef science. It ensures we are seeking solutions that are practical and workable."
