About 1.6 million tourists from Australia and around the world visit the Great Barrier Reef each year. They are vitally important to the region's economy, bringing in about $1 billion a year. There are over 700 tourism operators in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Tourists come to SCUBA dive and snorkel on the Reef, to experience its amazing wildlife, to relax on tropical islands, fish and enjoy watersports.

Sustainable tourism is a key area of CRC Reef's research for industry and management.
