Many types of fishing happen in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Fishing on the Reef is regulated by the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

Commercial fishing, which includes trawling, reef line fishing, inshore fish netting, crabbing, and harvesting of corals, beche-de-mer, trochus shells and aquarium fishes, is Queensland's 5th largest industry.

Recreational fishing, by line, net, pot and speargun is a popular activity, with almost 25,000 privately registered boats and up to 800,000 people fishing in the Great Barrier Reef region each year.

Traditional fishing is an important part of the cultural heritage and subsistence of the many saltwater Aboriginal people of the Great Barrier Reef region.

Fishing and Fisheries are a key area of CRC Reef's research for industry and management.
